If you want to keep your bird in favorable conditions you have to pay serious attention to its nourishment. Usually the cage pets are a kind of granivorous ones they are parrots, canaries, pigeons etc. But it doesn't intend them to eat only seeds. But in fact such birds change their ration each season in natural conditions. Birds like to vary their feed with different sorts of animal forages, greens, fruits, tree barks and so on. So bear in mind, that if you want your bird to be strong and healthy you are to feed it with various sorts of forage.
Today one can buy bulk bird seed almost everywhere, even on the web. As you see you can't feed your bird a whole year with seeds because it wouldn't harmonize with their natural nourishment.
From the first view you can not discover any disease after feeding your bird with the same forage for years. But with some time diseases will be revealed. But as a rule, the consequences of such nourishment can be revealed in the malfunction of moult, obesity, kidney illness and disorder of the reproductive function. And a lack of vitamins and proteins weakens the safeguard reaction of a bird's organism and makes it susceptible to different infectious diseases.
So the main part of a bird's meal contains grain blends. Different kinds of grains (wheat, millet, oats, maize and others) and seeds (canary seed, herbage seeds, seeds of lettuce) must be contained in this blend because it is very helpful for a bird's health. Of course there must be oil-bearing seeds such as sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, hemp seed and various nuts. But these sorts of seeds should be attached in a small amount because overdose of oil-bearing seeds provokes overweight.
Your bird should have a daily norm of its feed because every species has its own daily norm. Budgerigars should have two teaspoons a day and in the same time macaw needs four tablespoonfuls each day.
Also you can include in the blend different kinds of greens, fruits, vegetables, wild herbage, fresh leaves and branches of trees. Animal forage must be added to a bird's ration as a source of proteins. Eggs in a boiled condition, fatless curds or small amount of nonfat minced meat may be included in a bird's meal. You should give such forages to your bird once a week, but in molt period it will be twice a week and if it is a period of breeding - give it each day. You must also put in the bird's cage a feeder with chalk or small stones, they are important for good digestion and will give calcium to the bird's organism.
Birds also need a large cage for them to feel comfortable. A large amount of pet shops may offer you to buy different cages if you incline to bird homes.
